MEDITERRANEAN FRIDAYS XI: A TILE FACADE IN LISBON BY CAMARIM ARQUITECTOS

Camarim arquitectos sign this project in Lisbon. It is a single-family house in the heart of the old city centre, so its appearance and the way it coexists within the environment were specially relevant. An architectural work always has tobe adaptable to the place it occupies in the city. In this case, this adaptation runs by material, which could not be other than tiles because, as the co-founder of the studio Vasco Matias Correia says: "Tiles are endemic to Lisbon. Their light reverberation, colour and delicate scale are an intrinsic part of the city's urban atmosphere". Thus, the facade is made of three different types of skin, depending on the programme they hold inside: flat-surface tiles at street-level, bas-relief tiles on the two floors above and perforated steel panels covering the top floor's terrace.

It is not about copying and pasting, but about creating, innovating and taking risks always keeping the environment in mind. And all of this is perfectly done by Camarin arquitectos.

Camarim arquitectos firma este proyecto en Lisboa. Se trata de una vivienda unifamiliar en pleno casco histórico, por lo que resultaba especialmente importante su aspecto exterior y la forma en la que éste convivía con el entorno. Una obra arquitectónica siempre tiene que saber adaptarse al lugar que ocupa en la ciudad. En este caso, dicha adaptación ha corrido a cargo de los materiales empleados, que no podían ser otros que los azulejos pues, como bien dice Vasco Matias Correia, cofundador del estudio: "Los azulejos son endémicos a Lisboa. Su reverberación, color y pequeña escala son una parte intrínseca de la atmósfera urbana de la ciudad". De esta forma, la fachada se compone de tres tipos de pieles, en función del programa que alberga en su interior: azulejos planos a nivel de calle, con relieve en las dos siguientes plantas y paneles móviles de chapa perforada que cubren la terraza de la última.

No se trata de copiar y pegar, sino de crear, innovar y arriesgar teniendo siempre presente el entorno. Y esto Camarin arquitectos lo ha hecho a la perfección.
